Pumping Station, nocturne for "Interpretations" by Brooks Frederick

I was drawn to the mystery and poetry of Pile's nocturne As a boy, a family trip to Chicago included a visit to the Chicago Art Institute helped me fall in love with the Impressionists. In the decades since that trip, I often find myself drawn to poetic light conditions unique to our current culture and time. Depicting artificial light in a snowy gas station captured in Pile's work helps me feel I’m in conversation with Degas, Monet, Cassatt, and the Ashcan school here in NYC.
