Sonja Fries | Sterling Silver & large turquoise oval ring
Jewelry more than any other object I can think of, is the closest example of something that represents both, a person’s identity AND their soul.
My jewelry harkens back to my upbringing in rural Germany . If you ask me, many pieces feel a bit like “Game of Thrones meets Tiffany’s “ which is a combination of very traditional techniques , earthy but yet polished finish.
My work is produced by hand, using the traditional methods of jewelry making like sawing, forging, soldering. I work mostly in classic materials as in metals and stones/ pearls. Much like an architect, I set out with a unique vision and carefully select my materials . I design a piece and then start constructing , layer by layer.
I studied jewelry design and the art of craft at the bench in Pforzheim which is well known for its jewelry production as all well as for its design schools in Germany/Europe .
With my degree as a jewelry designer I started working in galleries in Munich as well in the highly reputed Galerie HILDE LEISS in Hamburg to add practice and real life experience to my portfolio.
I came to NYC in 1997 and since then I’ve been living and working out of this exciting city …..
Ideally I would like my jewelry to have the power to help express the personality of the person who wears it and to serve as an extension of their uniqueness and individual character.
